The Realistic Reset: Sunday Routines That Actually Work for Busy Women
Jun 23, 2025How many times have you opened Instagram and seen a "Sunday Reset" reel? It's usually a woman in fast-forward mode: unloading groceries, washing produce, speed-cleaning her house, then finally relaxing in an armchair with her feet up, sipping an Olipop. You think to yourself, "I should try that." But when Sunday actually arrives, you don't have a food list prepared, you're overstimulated from all the travel soccer you had to manage that weekend, and though all you want is to put your feet up, the family needs to eat—bringing you back to that dreaded question: "What's for dinner?"
Here’s what I want to tell you. With a bit of intention, you can have a Sunday Reset that works for you as well. As busy working women, we juggle a lot - it's a never-ending battle with tasks, projects, appointments to make, and errands to run. With just a few hours of intentional time on the weekend dedicated to meal prepping, tidying, setting a realistic schedule for the week ahead, and organizing your finances, you can transform your chaotic weeks into manageable ones. Starting each Monday feeling prepared and in control! It has completely transformed how I approach my work week, and I'm excited to show you exactly how this simple practice can do the same for you.
Why Sunday Resets Matter:
Taking intentional time on Sunday (or Saturday - you choose!) is like giving yourself the gift of a smoother week ahead. When you know what meals you're planning to make, that your finances are in order, and what your work priorities are, you're not just organizing tasks - you're setting yourself up for success.
Think about it: how many times have you rescheduled that lunch with your mentor because your inbox was overflowing, or declined joining the office wellness class because you hadn't prepped meals for the week? A Sunday reset helps eliminate that mental burden. When your calendar is strategically blocked, your meals are prepped, and your priority tasks are identified, you can confidently say "yes" to that impromptu networking coffee or join the team happy hour without calculating what work you'll need to finish at midnight.
One of the most powerful benefits is how it transforms your work boundaries. By getting ahead of your week, you gain clarity on what needs to be done, how long tasks will actually take, and when you can realistically shut down for the evening. This gives you the confidence to say "no" to additional projects when your plate is full and "yes" to opportunities that truly matter.
Perhaps most importantly, a Sunday reset helps you master the art of work-life balance. Let's be real - some weeks will lean more heavily toward work, while others will prioritize personal time. But when you're ahead of the game, you can intentionally design your week instead of letting it design you. You're no longer dragging yourself to Friday, mentally exhausted. Instead, you're navigating your days with purpose and clarity.
For me, the word 'reset' is all about mental preparation. It gives me permission to release the stresses from the previous week while mentally preparing for the week ahead. This intentional mindset shift ensures I'm making time for what truly matters most in my life. Rather than just being about tasks, it's about creating emotional space to start fresh!

Quick-Start Guide (keeping it realistic):
Here are some strategies I do myself during my Sunday Reset that help me get ahead of the week:
Meal Prep: My husband and I plan out our meals for the week on Saturday morning and then my husband typically goes food shopping on Sunday mornings. That planning puts me ahead of what I plan to cook for dinner for the week, but I will use Sunday to clean all the produce, roast any veggies we agreed to for the week, roast our potatoes, cook and shred chicken and make rice. By knowing what meals I’m cooking for dinner and preparing a lot of the food, I don’t have to think about what I’m making for dinner AND it doesn't take me long to pull dinner together in the evenings.
Clean The House: I have a roomba that runs daily, but on Sunday mornings I give the house a deeper vacuum and mop the floors. I’ll also make sure I clean what I wasn't able to get to during the week (Andy and I give ourselves 1 task to manage every day for 15 mins so we don’t spend the whole weekend cleaning).
Time Management: I do a brain dump of all the things I need to do for both work and personal and then I add it to my calendar. I will start with my self-care (I learned this technique from Nir Eyal), then I’ll add in what my family needs, and then I’ll schedule work priorities.
Finances: I balance my checkbook and budget so I can see where I’m spending. If I’m overspending anywhere, then I can scale back if needed. I also check in on long term savings and financial goals to ensure we’re on track.
All in all my Sunday Reset takes me about 3 hours to do, but I go into the week feeling present, in control and confident about what lies ahead. Obviously things will come up that I’ll have to pivot for, but I’m in control.
